2nd part of chapter 1 of book 2

Hi. I figured you probably want more of what's coming in book 2, so here's the second part of the first chapter. I still have some areas that need working (like showing instead of telling), and some people feel like everything's going a little perfect for Josun. Admittedly that wasn't what I was going for. I was just trying to show that life was going on for our heroes when disaster rears its ugly head. Feel free to let me know of any errors you spot. In the meantime, enjoy.

The next day, everyone in the castle was up bright and early. Everyone wanted to get started decorating for the happy event. The castle’s butlers and maids got to work cleaning the windows and sweeping the floors to make sure they were extra clean. The royal cooks began to cook up a feast fit for twenty kings. The head chief wanted to back a cake big enough for ten dragons as he said. Josun couldn’t even imagine something that big.
As for Josun and Saurina, the royal tailors kept them away to work on their wedding clothes. Each of them had to be measured to see how big their clothes needed to be. They wanted to use the finest material they had to make the wedding clothes. Josun was fine using his regular clothes, but said nothing, knowing that it would offend the servants if they weren’t allowed to work.
After they were done measuring him, they sent him off so they could begin working on designing the outfit. Josun went to the dueling room inside the castle where he could practice his swordplay. Many knights of Bylouth were there, working on perfecting their skills or training their squires. Some of the squires were having trouble keeping their weapons in their hands, so someone usually ended up with a dent in their armor or a piece of their tunic cut off.
“Josun!” One of the knights called out when they spotted him. “What can we do for you?”
“Just here to practice.” Josun said. Reaching down his belt, he pulled up his sword Vedion. As soon as it was out of its sheath, the silver blade gave off its glow that made people reflect on their lives and things they would like to change. Holding the golden hilt, Josun began to practice on a wooden dummy in the corner.
Whenever Josun held Vedion, he felt the responsibility of having so powerful a weapon in his hands. He remembered the legends of how Vedion was used by kings in the old days before it was hidden by the Maiden of Melodies. There were those who would love to use the sword for their own evil purposes, but Vedion would not be used by someone with dark intentions. Josun always hoped that he would be able to resist the temptation to use the blade for himself and his own gain.
Josun quickly shook the thoughts from his head. If he dwelt on such fears, they would surely become a reality. Besides, the wizard Ipurv had said to him many times that if he would not be worthy at a later time, then the sword would not have chosen him at all. He must never let such worries keep him from drawing the sword. He had seen what had happened to a satyr who wasn’t worthy to use the sword, and not once had it happened to him. Nothing should make him think otherwise, as Ipurv would tell him.
Swinging the sword around one last time, Josun sent the arms of the dummy spinning around, the dull metal flying out from its hands and all the way to the door. Clapping caught Josun by surprise as he turned around and saw a young boy a few years younger than him standing there.
“Well done!” The boy said as he came up to Josun. “One of the best practices I’ve ever seen.”
“Thank you, sir…” Josun said, not knowing who this person was. He had light brown hair and a friendly look to him.
“Oh, it’s Grythod, sir.” Grythod introduced himself. “I’m your new page.”
“My page?” Josun asked as he sheathed Vedion.
“Yes. I am honored to be able to learn from you.”
“Oh. Well, I am honored to be able to teach you. I was just finishing up.”
“Does that mean that you’re about to leave?” Grythod asked with a disappointing look coming across his face.
“No. If you want we can begin right now.” Josun’s response brightened up Grythod’s face. He hurried to the wall and grabbed some of the wooden swords to practice with. When he brought them over Josun he took one of them and stood at the ready. When Grythod held up his wooden sword they began with some of the basic tactics for sword wielding. Grythod was not very experienced because in a few swipes he had been disarmed.
“It’s okay Grythod. It’ll take practice.” Josun said. “Try again.”
This practice went on for a while. Grythod kept working hard and Josun could see he was getting better the more they practiced. Josun wondered if any of his ancestors had been warriors. Yes Grythod wasn’t a professional and didn’t show any skill right now, yet there was something about him that said he could become great.

It was an hour later when Josun had finished working with Grythod. Replacing the swords he moved out into the castle to see what Saurina was doing. She wasn’t in her room or out in the garden, so he decided to check the library. She was there reading a book about the legacy of the husaurs, which she now spent more time in than any other book in the library. Josun admitted he like The Adventures of Titlonius, a husaur who had stopped the invasion of barbarians in the land.
“Oh, Josun, I didn’t hear you come in.” Saurina said as she looked up from her book.
“Well, this place is filled with books. Maybe they silenced my footsteps.” Josun joked.
Saurina smiled. “Probably. There’s a lot that’s hidden in here. I doubt even Ipurv has read all the titles that we keep in here.” She said.
“Wouldn’t surprise me. Your father said all the kings have been adding to the collection.”
“At least we don’t have to worry about unexpected surpri—what was that?” She asked as they heard a loud boom. Standing up, the princess ran out of the library followed by Josun. In the hall, they saw many of the nights from the dueling room running in the direction of the entrance. They tried to ask what was going on, but nobody answered them. Finally they decided to follow everyone to see what the cause was.
As soon as the doors came into view, Saurina let out a gasp. The immense wooden doors looked as if several cannons and a battering ram had forced them open, because they were split and heavily cracked. All around the door laid knights who looked as if they had been hit by dragon shields. In the middle of the entryway a man stood fighting off the incoming knights. He had on a black cloak with the hood pulled down to show he looked middle age with messy brown hair and a serious expression. His wooden staff withstood the blows of the knights swords and constantly shot out beams of magic that knocked them back.
“What is going on here?” King Ifen demanded to know as he came down the stairs. As soon as he saw the scattered warriors and the warlock, he paled as if he had met this person before. Queen Arias was not far behind him, and she gasped as she saw who it was.
“So after all these years you do remember.” The wizard said when he gazed upon them. Holding his staff high, he proclaimed, “It is I, Jerith, Head Sage of the Council of Magic, conqueror of the barbarian thylls, and the soon-to-be husband of the princess Saurina!”

Book updates

Wow. Again I wasn't able to do blog posts for a week. I'll try to do better next time. I did just want to give you a heads up with how book two is coming along. I'm working on a chapter that I hope will be well received. All I'll say is that it'll help show what Saurina is going to do while Josun is on the quest.
I've also been receiving tips and ideas as to how to move the story along. This week I got some good help with coming up with climaxes for the stories. Some of the ideas that were presented I really like and look forward to developing them.
Apart from that, the new website is almost up and ready. I'll share the link when it's finished. I really like the design.

Excerpt from Dymos book 2 chapter 1

Wow, it's been a while since I updated this blog. I've got some short stories in the works. However I was asked to share something I got feedback on from a writing club. I'll share this with you and if you could provide any feedback that would be appreciated. Originally this was going to be book 4. However I've been thinking and I've decided that it would probably be best to have the series go forward in chronological order. Some series were able to pull off jumping around the time stream of that world, but I will not try it. Now, see what has been going on since we last left our heroes:

The city of Raun Nijhor was bustling with excitement as everyone waited for the announcement of the wedding day of their beloved princess. It had been a year ago that her husband-to-be Josun had set out to find the sword Vedion to stop the Magic’s Bane, an order of knights from Earth who were dedicated to exterminating anything and everything magical in an attempt to create peace. The knights had been let in by the dark wizard Drakorn, who had wanted them to upset Dymos so much that it would destroy itself while he left to take over Earth. Luckily Josun and his friends arrived in time to stop his diabolical plot and save the world.
From his quarters in the castle, Josun looked out at the eager city that was preparing to hear the announcement. Although Josun was a peasant and not a prince, he had asked the princess Saurina to marry him. She had accepted, but according to Bylouth tradition marriage between a noble and a peasant had to go through a trial. Josun had to prove that he could handle the affairs of the kingdom and wouldn’t abuse the power of the king when the current ruler passed away. It had been a difficult time for him to learn about the way hierarchy worked, but he managed to pass the test. Now they could announce the day of the marriage.
“Nervous?” A voice asked behind him. Josun looked to see Saurina standing in the doorway. The princess had a royal green dress on with purple sleeves and a crystal tiara on. Her brownish-blonde hair billowed past her shoulders, giving her amber eyes a beautiful look.
“Very much.” Josun admitted, “It’s just so tense to announce something to a large multitude of people in one place.”
Saurina smiled. “My father felt the same way.” She told him, “He just kept taking breathes and made sure he knew what he was going to say to the crowd.”
“I still think I’d rather be learning to read from Ipurv than speak to a multitude.”
Saurina laughed. “My father felt the same way, only it was to go and face a rabid dragon instead of learning from a wizard.”
Josun laughed with her. When they were together, it was hard to not be in a good mood. It was hard to think that a year ago he had been dreading a visit from his aunt and cousins. Now here he was, preparing to announce the day that he would wed Saurina.
“Sir Josun! Princess Saurina!” A voice cried out from the hallway. Both of them poked their heads out to the door to see a page running up to them. “The king wants the two of you outside in the next few minutes to announce your wedding day!” The page said.
Looking at each other in surprise at the sudden announcement of hurry, Josun and Saurina rushed past the page and rand down the hallway. Past the murals and portraits of heroes and kings they hurried, eager to not be late for this important announcement. They each ran down two stairs at a time, with Josun nearly tripping over himself. The halls continued to echo their footsteps as they hurried to the door.
As they approached the immense doors, they saw Saurina’s mother, Queen Arias, waiting for them. She had on her royal purple gown and had her blonde hair braided in her usual fashion. However, today she had on a silver crown that Saurina knew she only wore to special occasions.
“Where have you two been?” She asked as they approached. “The crowd’s been waiting patiently to hear you announce your big day.”
“We know. We thought we didn’t need to be here for a little while.” Saurina explained while her mother looked eagerly outside.
“It’s fine. You’re here and everyone’s there. Just go out there and tell them of the big day!” With that, Queen Arias shoved them outside. Immediately a cheer went up from the crowd as they saw that the people who they’ve been waiting for had finally arrived. The both of them waved nervously as they got to the stand where Saurina’s father, King Ifen, stood waiting for them. The king had on a blue and brown tunic with leather pants and his royal purple cape on. His golden crown sat in his brown hair.
“Okay you two, you know what to do.” He said as he stepped off and allowed them to step up. Josun immediately became scared when he saw the vastness of the crowd. It was as if every citizen in Bylouth had come for the announcement of the special day. His stomach felt weak and his legs felt as if they would just give way.
“Come on Josun, tell them.” Saurina whispered in his ear. Hearing her voice gave him confidence and repelled his weakness. Standing up, Josun cleared his throat and spoke loudly.
“Good day everyone,” He began. “It has been a long year since I asked this beautiful princess to marry me. I have worked hard to prove I am worthy of her and now the time has come for when we can end the waiting of our wedding day announcement.” Clearing his throat one more time, he continued, “We have decided to be wed on the day when spring gives way to summer.”
At this declaration, a loud cheer went up from the crowd. That day was only a few weeks away and that meant these two wouldn’t have to wait long before their lives were joined. That still gave them plenty of time to prepare for that day.

When they were back inside, Josun breathed hard in relief that it was over. King Ifen had stepped up and continued to speak to the people of the importance of how summer would allow them to grow their crops before the winter season blew in. Josun knew the lessons well, and was just glad he didn’t have to speak to the crowd again.
“I know how you feel.” Saurina comforted him, “I was just as nervous being up there in front of all those people.”
“I can’t imagine anyone being comfortable with giving a speech to a multitude.” Josun said.
“It would certainly take nerves of steel to do it.”
“At least everyone knows when we’ll be married.”
“No, not everyone.” Saurina remembered. “Our closest friends don’t know.”
Josun nodded, remembering all the friends they made while they were traveling the land. The elf Ehist had returned to her home city of Fiaxiclaun to visit her family while Tnor the dwarf went back home to Mining Falls to continue making things. Belizth, their centauride friend, had gone off to be with her own centaur herd somewhere on Sodow, but they were always moving so Josun had no idea where they were. Their biggest companion, Goalith the dragon, had returned to his territory on the mainland of Bylouth. They had never found out where exactly it was.
“So that’s when you two plan to finally stop waiting.” A familiar voice said. The two of them turned to see Ofni coming towards them. Ofni was a fire thief they had met in the Myriad Mountains. He couldn’t speak human languages at first, but the Dream Damsel bestowed upon him this ability because he had wanted to be able to understand humans.
“And how have you been Ofni?” Josun asked their little friend.
Ofni reached down to preen some of his fiery red and orange down before answering, “Just hunting. Those squirrels are really quick and hard to get. They also cheat, going up trees.”
“Don’t worry, you’ll get there.” Saurina comforted. She was a husaur and had a special connection to all the animals of the land. Although she liked the squirrels, she preferred to not discourage Ofni from practicing his hunting skills.
“My pack would not be as understanding as you two are.” Ofni replied. This was a new statement for Josun, for although he had heard that fire thieves hunted in packs, Ofni had never mentioned his pack before. They had tried to ask him about it, but neither of them had been able to get the information from him.
“Well, we can hope that everyone else hears about it in time to get here to join us.” Saurina said. Josun smiled, knowing that would make Ofni happy.

Thoughts on Dymos

Time to do another blog post. I think what I can do now is give you some ideas as to what I hope to do with book two of the Myths of Dymos. I won't give set-in-stone ideas yet. Whether or not I do will have to wait. What I plan to share here is some things I would like to try and accomplish with the sequel.

While I did a good job story wise for the first book of the Myths of Dymos I didn't really show the world. There's so much to a world that we are often not told except in those guidebooks to the world. I didn't really share what Bylouthian culture is like. What forms of art do they celebrate? What are some of the festivities and holidays they have? What of their history? The people have lived in that land for over a thousand years and I'd like to show what has come as a result.

I did show that Dymos has a great ecological diversity. Perhaps I did a little more telling than showing. I focused a little more on the amount of wildlife instead of the quality. I didn't show what the animals were like and how the people have learned to live with them other than they try to avoid the predators when they're hungry. Have they used some of the prehistoric animals as beasts of burden? What's the lifestyle of some of the mythological races like minotaurs and satyrs? Do some of the prehistoric animals make good meals?  Are there any magical plants at all? So much that could be done in a series that I hope to be able to do in the next book.

One of the biggest things I hope to be able to improve on with the next book is to have the characters learn important lessons on how to better themselves. We all have areas that we need to improve on. Everyone has a challenge that they need to overcome. Writing a good story is good and all. However I think it should be a way to help us learn to be better. I'm not saying that the only way we can ever overcome our problems is to go on some mythical quest. Those are relatively scarce these days. However we can try to show people examples of overcoming challenges so they can have hope and try to overcome their problems. Some may say "But I'm not them. I'm me!" That's what makes you special. You can overcome anything you face if you try. You can write your own stories. If you fall, don't worry. Just pick yourself up and try again. Never give up.

I did learn of a good story element that I would like to use more in book two: Plot twists. A story can sometimes do what life does and throw at you a sudden, unexpected twist and turn. I don't think I used that a lot in book one. Of course I was still relatively new to writing by then. Now it's something I can improve on with this sequel.

You are probably wondering when my next book will be available. Truth is that I don't know. I'll keep writing and let you know when it is done. Of course I may go back and work on the draft because it probably won't be ready first go. Some authors spend years perfecting their work. I'll do my best to not take that long. There will  be other events going on in my life that will also call for my time, like education. I'll just do my best to write when I can.

Possible Book 2 Title

It's been a while, but I've been busy with a lot of things. I've still been working on book 2 of the Myths of Dymos and it's coming along great. I'm sure people who read it will find it as enjoyable as the first book.
The title I would like to go with for the second myth of Dymos is The Myths of Dymos: The Thirteen Curses. The two main protagonists mentioned before are kids from Earth who learn of Dymos and travel there to help undo a great wrong. They do meet some of the characters from the original story, and make friends with some new characters.

In this book the readers will learn a little bit more about how magic in Dymos works. It will not be a series of complex spells like in the Harry Potter series, and neither will it be the kind that will drain your energy as in The Inheritance Cycle. Rather, it'll be more...well, you'll have to wait and find out.

For those of you who don't know exactly what a Spinosaurus is, here's the information. Spinosaurus was a large predatory dinosaur whose fossil remains were found in what is now Egypt. In recent years, Spinosaurus has become an incredibly popular dinosaur, appearing in films like Jurassic Park III and on television shows like Dinosaur King and Dino Squad. One of the most distinguishing features about Spinosaurus was that it had a sail on its back like Dimetrodon. There have been some theories that Spinosaurus was one of the largest predators in its day, with a possible length of 50-60 feet. Now that is definitely something you don't want to cross paths with in the prehistoric world. Exactly how it ties into the story will have to wait. In the meantime, keep spreading the word around about The Myths of Dymos: Power of Vedion. The only way that the story can get successfully around is if you tell your friends about it.
